Fun Town Splash Town

My apologizes for not being further up to date / keeping up with the blog a bit more. The truth is, we have been going to Fun Town – Splash Town just about everyday around here ! We have been seriously blessed with some amazing summer sailing weather and we have had the amazing opportunity to take full advantage everyday we can : )

Fun Town – Splash Town !!

Coastal Cruising / Coastal Skills ACA L3 IDW

Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend the day on the water with a super cool group of paddlers ! Special shout out to Nate Hanson with Pinniped Kayak ! Nate is always there to help take my kayaking skills to the next level. If you never taking any of his classes..do it ! Not only did I have the opportunity to check back in with my own skill set ( always a good thing to do ) but Pinniped Kayak always leaves me with a whole new set of tools and skills to refine.

Now to the question, what do all these letters mean together and why is there a 3 in the middle..ha ?! Short answer : American Canoe Association Level 3 Instructor Development Workshop. A bit longer of a explanation : Here at Acadia Ocean Adventures we will continue to stay committed to building our skills and adapting to our ever changing environment while paddling. Doing workshops like this helps us cover certain content IE: Risk management, practical navigation, identifying goals for each individual, maneuvering in 2-3ft seas with up to 15kts of wind ( obviously not for everyone but good to train in ) universal principals and much, much more..

Now to sum it up : Kayaking is fun, and its done on the water, so we believe that during kayaking instruction we should be having fun on the water as much as possible! We also believe one of the best ways to get there is keep our own skills personally tuned and refined over and over and over.

Let the fun begin!

So quick confession…this post was suppose to have gone out yesterday but time and tide wait for no man (see pictures below).

Before I fill ya in on that one, I just wanted everyone to know that all of our boats here at Acadia Ocean Adventures are officialy in the water or are at least inches away from it awaiting their next adventure! There is absoutely no better way to avoid the crowds than being on the water and in a boat. We are ready for the fun and adventures to begin 🙂

Regarding the picture posted below: Here is a prime example on how we do it here in Maine! With our tides typically rising and falling about 10ft, nearly all of that was needed to make this boat float effortlessly off her cradle and be carried out to her new home here at Emery’s Cottages. S/V Journey is a 23ft Catalina sloop. She is a great new addition to our ‘Coastal Cruising Sailing Lessons Program’. More pictures and info to come as we begin to get under way here this summer 🙂

Pebbles on the beach for some…for students and instructors in this pic…formulating a game plan for anticipation is the key to success !

As a Maine Guide in the Kayak industry and sport we are constantly being challenged with our ever changing environments. On a daily basis we can seem to experience all 4 seasons in the matter of hours. In fact if you haven’t heard it already one of the saying here in Maine (and we have many) but in regards to the weather is ‘Just wait 5 minutes’. It’s easy to get complacent or even just be happy with where were at in our paddling skills. For some a quiet day on the pond or just a calm coastal cruise is all we need…and oh yeah maybe a few sightings of some cool wildlife and the obligatory picture of a light house..ha.

I knew when creating AcadiaOceanAdventures that we would have to not only see but also meet these certain challenges head on. Be it by Kayak, SUP or Sailboat it is our promise to continue to not only strive but also educate ourselves in this very special ever changing coastal environment.

By aligning ourselves with the American Canoe Association as a Awarded Level 3 trip Leader we simply pull away from the rest of the crowds in regards to our commitment to the sport. We surround ourselves with other committed leaders developing water skills and supporting and encouraging a healthy living and social responsibility. We have begun to form a new community with in the paddling industry here on Mount Desert Island and we happily encourage you to be a part of it.
